6 Essential Student Storage Tips

Whether it’s for the summer or for a gap year; at Go Box Self Storage, we believe in making your student life as stress-free as possible!

As the end of the student year edges closer, you are no doubt thinking about getting your personal belongings stored safely away.
So for that reason, we have put together a list of essential hints and tips to ensure packing (and unpacking) is hassle free!

So, Where to Start?

Well, before you start, a little bit of planning is required. Luckily, we can lend a hand. Included in our service is our student storage pack, that is filled with the essential items you need to successfully pack. These essential items include 5 good quality Boxes (400x420x600mm), Bubble Wrap (5m x 30cm), 1 x 60m Roll of Packing Tape and 1 marker pen.

It’s Time to Declutter!

Clothes you don’t wear anymore, shoes that are worn, lamps that don’t work! Look over your belongings- are there items you don’t use or need? Maybe there are things that you have shoved to the back of a wardrobe that are just taking up space? Now is the time to get rid of what you don’t need and declutter.

Utilise the Storage Boxes

Fill your cardboard boxes completely and distribute items evenly throughout. Heavy items should be placed at the bottom of a box, with lighter items on top to reduce breakage. When wrapping items, don’t use newspaper as there is a chance that ink might stain. In addition to this, wrap footwear in tissue paper to protect them. Double up space by stuffing your shoes with socks. This will also prevent shoes from losing shape.

Protect Easily Breakable Kitchenware

If you have lots of plates, it is much safer to pack them vertically as this will reduce the chance of them breaking or chipping. If you run out of bubble wrap, utilise towels or socks to separate and protect.

Label and Itemise Each Box

Throwing things randomly into a box may seem like a good idea when you are packing; but when it comes to unpacking, it can be very problematic. Keep similar items together- so one box could be for books, one for clothes, one for kitchen items etc. As you pack your boxes, remember to keep a note of what is in each box, then stick that note at the top of each box. Label each box so that when we deliver your belongings to your new accommodation, you know what is in each box.

Reduce Spillages and Breakages

Toiletries are always at risk of spilling. If you are not able to use them up before you go, tape the bottle caps closed and put in sandwich bags. Jewellery can also be a problem to store so remember to utilise straws for necklaces and egg cartons, pillboxes or lunchboxes to stop items getting lost or broken. Need to store makeup safely? No problem! Just place a cotton wool pad between the lid and the powder to prevent powders breaking up. Remember to secure the powders and place in food bags to stop any spillages.

Other Odds and Ends

For all those other little things that don’t fit in any specific category, again utilise sandwich bags. Simply label and put away in a box.

What Exactly is Mobile Self Storage?

So, what is Mobile Self Storage?

Go Box started business in May 2016, here at our depot in central Belfast and apart from close family and friends asking: ‘Well, how’s business?’, the most common question I get is – what is mobile self storage?

– Business is great by the way, and thank you for asking, but it’s this second question I need to answer here…

Most of us have seen Storage Hunters on TV in recent years. It’s a familiar set up, as big ‘Green Mile’ snaps open another storage unit, the fast talking Sean Kelly auctions off the promise of hidden treasures. Meanwhile husband and wife team Lori and Brandon try to out bid the hapless Jesse or ‘Papa Bear’ for the bragging rights to untold riches, before finally discovering they’ve been sold a pup.

Is it real or staged? – Who knows, but regardless of the authenticity of the cast, it is filmed on location at genuine self storage sites in the US and UK. You will notice that some of the locations provide outside ‘drive to’ storage units whilst others provide the more traditional indoor corridor style locker units. Both of these solutions provide customers with easy to access storage and are popular both sides of the Atlantic. But, without stating the obvious, the purpose of a self storage centre is to store stuff and that requires some means of transportation to get your stuff there safely.

So What’s it to Be?

The family hatchback? – The sofa might have to go on the roof and you’ll have to make several return trips, but where there’s a will there’s a way.
Van Rental? – Takes more forward planning but you might have help and the risk is manageable provided you take out the Excess Insurance Cover.
Removal Company? – A more expensive option but provided they’ve been recommended and you’ve been allocated their best movers, fingers crossed.

The problem is, even if you have a friend with access to a van, who is willing and able to help you out, all these solutions require the unnecessary double handling of your goods. i.e. Load at your house, unload at the loading bay, transfer to your storage unit and lock it up. Be warned, it’s common practice that only the longest staying and highest paying tenants get the storage units closest to the entrance. – And don’t forget, you’ve to do this all again on the return trip – Yikes!

Could you live in a Self Storage Unit in Belfast for 2 months?

You Tube blogger 007craft has done just that in the USA —in a U-Haul storage unit. The key, he says, is to do nothing that could get you noticed.

I had just came back from hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and found myself homeless. I had given up my apartment to go hike and now that I was back I wanted to turn my car into a livable space. I eventually did that (follow this link to view the video) but found I still needed access to lots of stuff from my storage unit which was 6x4x10 and everything was just jammed in there. I figured there had to be a better way. I scoped out a 10x10x6 unit and moved all my stuff inside. Still super small, I managed to build shelves and organize it in a way where everything is accessible. But why stop there! I decided to build shelves and a water system and setup my actual apartment so I could live there. I was moving in! I ended up living in the unit for around 2 months.

The cost of rent on the U-Haul unit was $205 a month (which included insurance). A bargain, considering an apartment in the area was $1000+ a month. He made this video showcasing his work/unit.

Arrival of custom built storage pods

The Go Box self storage warehouse in Belfast is starting to fill up quickly following the delivery of more than fifty new custom-built storage pods.

The pods are made from locally sourced pinewood and manufactured in Northern Ireland to the Go Box specification for secure mobile storage. Each pod has a 280 cubic feet capacity and capable of holding over 1 tonne of storage. They are designed to fit snugly into our unique mobile storage trailers for easy transportation to and from our customer’s own premises.

Go Box welcomes first customer

Go Box Self Storage Ltd has welcomed its first mobile self storage customer to its Belfast storage warehouse.

Maria McAuley, who lives and works in North Belfast, heard about Go Box Self Storage and contacted us in March. Boxes and packing materials were ordered and delivered in advance of the move date. Then on the following Monday a Go Box storage unit arrived as scheduled, was loaded and returned to our secure self storage depot.

Maria, who is Australia bound, was delighted with the service and has already recommended Go Box Self Storage to her cousin.
