How To Pack For Moving House

storage hacks for moving home

When moving house, there is enough stress going round with contracts, loans, mortgages etc. At this time you should try to minimise any hassle and make the process as straight forward as possible.

One way would be to sort your packing out as efficiently as possible to help make packing as stress-free as possible.

• Make sure you begin packing early

A large part of how long it takes you to pack all of your items depends on their number. You should begin the process earlier than most people believe. If you pack a box a day, two months should be enough for a large house. One month should suffice for smaller homes. The number isn’t exact, but you get the idea.

• Consider starting with less frequently used rooms and items

You can begin by cleaning the rooms on the highest floor, especially if you have a loft, and then, little by little, move down to the lower floors. You can pack seasonal items such as garden tools, coats, and Christmas lights before you handle everything else. As you sort through your already packed belongings, you can make it easier to decide which boxes to take with you and which to donate to charity or give away.

• Declutter and donate

Donate your old unwanted items to charity or hold a garage sale for things you don’t want to take. You can also sell items on eBay, so you have plenty of options. You might want to ask your friends who are helping you with your move whether they need anything you plan to sell.

• List your inventory in detail

You can use these if you have a large collection of books, CDs, trinkets, etc. Labeling your moving boxes with “Books” is fine. We recommend typing out detailed inventory lists if you have a specialised literature collection not kept in a single room. Using your phone, you can upload the spreadsheets while printing out and sticking copies to each box.

• Take it one room at a time

For some reason, this is one of the most important packing tips that often goes overlooked. It is debated whether to store items by room or by category. Whatever is easiest for you is what you should do. Our recommendation, however, is to pack your belongings by room. In this way, you will stay organised and will be able to tell the movers, or anyone unloading, which box goes where later. Unloading and unpacking your items can also be done in reverse – from the top to the bottom.

Packing your valuables

Whether it is sentimental value or monetary value, there will always be items that are more valuable to you. Breakage or loss during packing can really devastate you and ruin your move.

Jewellery / Small valuables storage

Focus on these items first, so you know they are taken care of. Rather than adding these items to another box, it may be worth taking them with you.

Jewellery can easily get tangled, so storing them in their original boxes and packing them tightly in a small box will minimise the mess. The edges of the box can be filled out by stuffing paper or fabric around them.

Storing electrical goods

Ensure that you have emptied and drained items. You should allow your freezer enough time to defrost and keep the doors open during this process. Whenever possible, it is best to clean these items before transporting them. To keep them from trailing behind, simply tape them shut and tape the wires and plugs.

• Do not exceed the limit of 30 kg per box

Small boxes should be used for heavy items and large boxes for light items.
